A Note from Gallery Owner Dina Pugh:

After seven years of adventurous exhibitions and events by emerging artists, Triple Base will be closing its doors, with a closing party to celebrate all of our friends and accomplishments on Saturday, January 7th, starting at 8pm and going late. Join us on the early side to converse and on the later end to D-A-N-C-E!

I think of this not as an ending but a new beginning for the space on 24th Street, myself and the artists who worked alongside Joyce Grimm and me to build the gallery over the years. The physical gallery will turn into a thriving new art space lead by Lindsey White, David Kasprzak and Jordan Stein (please support them!) The Triple Base website and newsletters will remain a resource to gain information on new works and exhibitions by Triple Base artists as well as my new curatorial projects.

Although I have relocated to New York, I remain dedicated to the Bay Area artists I have championed over the years and I hope to build on this work through my art advisory service, independent curatorial endeavors and a new creative agency I co-founded with Adam Katz and David Kramer, Imprint Projects. Please continue to contact me at dina@basebasebase.com for any inquiries about new works or commissions.

Although we have shown countless artists through our flat files, events and exhibitions I would like to thank the core group that really built the ship and who I plan to continue to work with in the future: Jay Nelson, Rachel Kaye, Todd Bura, Alexander Kori Girard, Bryson Gill and Oliver Halsman Rosenberg who founded the gallery in 2003 with Clint Taniguchi. I am so proud of how all of these artists have flourished over the past half decade. Joyce and I started showing many of them fresh out of art school and watched them steadily expand their practice and their careers, now exhibiting throughout the US and internationally to critical acclaim.

I would also like to thank the many people whose support the gallery relied upon: Larry Rinder who was a mentor and advocate since the earliest days of Triple Base, Steven Leiber our trusty critic and quiet champion, Leigh Markopoulos, Jens Hoffmann, Sabrina Buell, Kenneth Baker, Rene de Guzman, Marjory Graue and Marianna Stark. Although Triple Base did not have an official Board of Directors, these people (and many others too great to be named here) were integral to our past success and future accomplishments. I also have to mention all of our loyal clients who kept us afloat while giving our work meaning through their true passion for art.

We also owe so much to Will Brown who has led the gallery for the past six months, and to our many die-hard interns throughout the years (most recently Heidi Rabben, Anouk Jonker, Brandon Holmes and Leef Smith). Thank you, thank you!

I also write this letter on behalf of Joyce Grimm, my partner and Triple Base’s co-director who re-invented the gallery with me in 2005 and worked hard to create a new kind of emerging artist space for six years, one that did not rely on the traditional commercial gallery model, but integrated the values and strategies of non-profits and entrepreneurial upstarts. We are humbled by the outpouring of support Triple Base has received over the years. Please stay in touch and come join us on January 7th for a celebration!

All the best,
Dina Pugh

Triple Base is pleased to present The Optimist Gene, an exhibition of new paintings by San Francisco-based artist Bryson Gill.

Gill’s dedicated painting practice has consistently been focused on the tenuous relationship between abstraction and figuration. While in his past work, Gill has culled imagery from personal and historical references, for his upcoming solo show at Triple Base, Gill has created his own source material out of the simplest of materials—a blank sheet of white paper. Beginning with a “blank slate” allows the artist to create original compositions through a meandering process of cutting, ripping, folding and crumpling. Like a Rorschach blot, these resulting forms oscillate between abstract shapes and recognizable objects such as leaves and branches—exposing the often arbitrary, yet magical, part of the artistic process. These compositions are then collaged, photographed and painted with a trompe-l’oeil effect onto linen that has been under-painted with graphic patterns and painterly washes.

Gill’s newest series of paintings embody the way in which random acts and interactions can create both beauty and chaos. Referring to this new style of working, the artist claims. “I sort of think about making art these days like a dog chasing it’s own tail. And that makes me happy.”

Bryson Gill lives and works in San Francisco, CA and received his Bachelors in Fine Art from California College of the Arts in 2005. Gill has had solo shows at Co-Lab, Copenhagen, Denmark; Jace Gace, Portland, OR; Kayo Gallery, Salt Lake City, UT and Triple Base, San Francisco, CA. He has also been featured in group exhibitions at Baer Ridgway Exhibitions, San Francisco, CA; Galerie Davide Di Maggio, Milan, Italy; Galleri Kant, Espen, Denmark; Mahan Gallery, Columbus, OH, Headlands Center for the Arts, Sausalito, CA; and Sonoma Valley Museum of Art, Sonoma, CA. Gill’s work has been reviewed in The San Francisco Chronicle, Art Practical, The San Francisco Bay Guardian, Flavorpill, and Artspeak.

Triple Base is pleased to present CUT OUT, a solo exhibition of drawing, painting, and sculpture by San Francisco-based artist Rachel Kaye. CUT OUT demonstrates a shift in Kaye’s practice, marked by her use of new techniques such as editing, cropping, and collage. As in her previous work, Kaye continues to play with fashion editorials and advertisements as her source material. However, in this new body of work, Kaye obscures the original image by zooming in and deconstructing patterns, movement and colors within the frame.

In conjunction with CUT OUT, Triple Base is pleased to announce the publication of a catalogue that surveys Kaye’s work from 2008-2011.

Rachel Kaye lives and works in San Francisco, CA and received her Bachelors in Fine Art from California College of the Arts in 2004. Kaye has had solo shows at Season, Seattle, WA (2011), Gavlak Gallery, New York City & Palm Beach, FL (2010), Triple Base, San Francisco, CA (2009 & 2011) and Adobe Books Backroom Gallery, San Francisco, CA (2008). Kaye’s work has been reviewed in The Huffington Post, The San Francisco Bay Guardian, Blue Magazine, and Flavorpill.

Triple Base Gallery is pleased to present “ROMANCE” a show of recent paintings by Todd Bura. The body of work on display continues his investigation in the formal and personal aspects of painting. Bura’s concern with the state of a painting when viewed, and how the viewer develops the pictorial space, is exemplified in what he calls a “noticeable turn”. The painting remains as a placeholder for giving up and endless searching.

Todd Bura has been included in exhibitions at the Berkeley Art Museum, Berkeley, CA (2009 & 2011), Jancar Gallery, Los Angeles (2007), Triple Base, San Francisco, CA (2008 & 2009), Headlands Center for the Arts, “Front + Center” (curated by Kimberly Johansson), Sausalito, CA (2009); Meridian Gallery “Form +” (curated by Larry Rinder), San Francisco, CA (2008); Co-Lab, Copenhagen, Denmark (2007); Dumbo Arts Festival, Brooklyn, NY (2002) and Visual Arts Gallery (curated by Haim Steinbach), New York, NY (2001). Bura received his BFA from The School of Visual Arts, NY in 2002 and will earn his MFA from UC Irvine in 2012. His work is in the permanent collection of the Berkeley Art Museum and has been reviewed in Frieze, Artweek, San Francisco Chronicle, San Francisco Bay Guardian and Shotgun Review.

September 16 – October 16

The Ellipsis Space is pleased to present work by Madiha Siraj. An installation artist, Siraj immerses the audience in beautiful yet disquieting constructions of unknown origin. Through her installations Siraj seeks to challenge her audiences’ standards of perception, recognition and context.

The central goal behind Siraj’s installations is the translation of Islamic principles into visual form. With combinations of thought provoking spatial manipulation and a strikingly rich color palette Siraj re-contextualizes Islamic images and principles. Like an unseen choreographer Siraj guides her viewers through unfamiliar movements and actions without their knowledge. Encountering the Islamic content out of context while also having a bodily experience combine to give the viewer both an intellectual and physical experience.

This exhibition marks the opening of a new part of the Triple Base gallery, Ellipsis Space, and the first collaboration between Madiha Siraj and both Triple Base and Ellipsis Space.

Living and working in San Francisco, Siraj is currently finishing her MFA degree from California College of the Arts. A graduate of the University of California San Diego, Siraj’s work has been exhibited in the PlAySPACE Gallery, San Francisco; the Annex Gallery; Thumbprint Gallery; and at Gelatovera. In addition she produced an on site installation as an artistic participant in the Craft Forward Symposium held at California College of the Arts this past Spring.

ArtPadSF Programming:

ArtPadSF is pleased to provide a broad cross-section of galleries, arts organizations and artists with a platform to present and accentuate the emerging disciplines and independent elements active in the contemporary art world and prominent in the Bay Area arts community. Offering arts enthusiasts and seasoned collectors the opportunity to discover new trends and artistic practices, ArtPadSF will feature approximately 30 select galleries, as well as four days of contemporary art programming, which includes the utilization of the Phoenix’s heated outdoor pool for live art performances such as, ‘Swimming Pool Social Sculpture’, by graduating and continuing MFA students from California College of the Arts (CCA) Graduate Fine Arts program, and a suspended art installation by LTMH Gallery artist Alexis Laurent.

Contemporary Art Panels and Tours:

ArtPadSF’s inaugural year will feature afternoon speaker panels on Friday and Saturday, May 19th and May 20th. Moderated by William Moreno, independent curator, writer and board vice president of Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions (LACE), the ArtPadSF speaker panels will begin Friday, May 20 at 12:30PM with ‘California Contemporary Art in Context.’ Featuring panelists Alma Ruiz, curator of contemporary art for The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (MOCA), Lawrence Rinder, director of the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, and Erik Bakke, San Francisco Bay Area based artist, ‘California Contemporary Art in Context’ will investigate and discuss recent artistic trends and practices in the context of California and global shifts, asking such questions as: ‘Where are artists focused?’ ‘How do they respond to their environments?’ ‘What can be gleaned from their practices?’ and ‘What new media or technologies are they employing?’ The panel aims to present an overview of various artist practices and works.

Following the Friday art panel, visitors are invited to tour ArtPadSF from 3-5PM with Marianna Stark, collector and publisher of “Stark Guide to San Francisco Art.” Listen in and learn as Marianna asks dealers about their program aesthetic, personal bios, and what they’re showing at ArtPadSF.

Attendance limited, advance registration required. Please inquire at info@artpadsf.com

Further invigorating ArtPadSF’s programming, Juxtapoz magazine will present a speakers panel, ‘Collecting Street Art’ on Saturday afternoon. Organized by Justin Giarla of White Walls Gallery, the panel will present international street artists Blek le Rat (France), EINE (UK), and APEX (US). Moderated by Pedro Alonzo, a member of San Francisco’s graffiti and street art community, the discussion will begin at 1PM on Saturday, May 21st.

For more information about the featured panelist please visit ArtPadSF.com

Swimming Pool Programming:

Saturday afternoon at 3PM don’t miss Glen Helfand’s curated ‘Swimming Pool Social Sculpture’, in which graduating and continuing MFA students from California College of the Arts (CCA) Graduate Fine Arts program will hit the pool and deck for a durational series of splashy, synchronized, and sculptural performance actions.

Later in the day on Saturday as the sun begins to set, EverGold gallery will take over the Phoenix swimming pool to present an original art performance piece. What it will be, we have yet to see.

Installed for the duration of the Fair and suspended above the Phoenix swimming pool, LTMH Gallery artist Alexis Laurent’s sculpture ‘Dandelions’, a teardrop arrangement of air plant sculptures, will be sure to make people look up.

ArtPadSF Evening Programming:

After all the other San Francisco art fairs have closed their doors for the evening, ArtPadSF will still be in full swing. Evening programming for ArtPadSF includes live bands and DJs, access to Chambers eat + drink the Phoenix Hotel’s new restaurant and bar, and ‘No Dialogue’ a series of outdoor video art screenings curated by Bay Area artist and author Dorka Keehn and Jasmine Moorhead of KrowsWork Gallery.

‘No Dialogue’ video works will be projected from the roof of the Phoenix Hotel onto the rear wall of Mayfair Hotel, achieving approximately a 50’ x 50’ image, from dusk until 10PM on Friday and Saturday. Notes Keehn, “If the old adage that a picture is worth a thousand words is to be believed, shouldn’t a whole series of images be able to speak for themselves? Dialogue in art is actually a relatively recent innovation; very few old paintings come with any words attached to them other than the title. Even performance art has often relied more heavily on body language and visual expression than on spoken words. With ‘No Dialogue’ we leave the theme open to artists’ interpretation.”

Live music will include ‘The Minks’ a San Francisco-based “mostly” all-girl Kinks tribute band playing Friday, May 20th from 6-8PM. Musical entertainment on Saturday night from 6-10PM will be provided by EverGold gallery, who will set the stage for all night event, presenting Bay Area DJs, works by artists including ArtPadSF’s second swimming pool art performance, and much more.

Additional ArtPadSF programming will include the unveiling of Eddie Colla’s new public mural commissioned for ArtPadSF, an opportunity on Sunday, May 22nd to meet the creators of Loose Leaf – a limited edition visual culture publication existing as a collection of unbound and large-format printed art and design works by such artists as Dave Eggers, Jake Longstreth, and Richard Misrach, and non-stop access during fair hours to the Virgin America sponsored Virgin Collector’s Lounge featuring an interactive installation by artist Chris Ritson exploring the narrative myth of the North African Lotus-Eater, through the contemporary perspective of its viewers.
